Day 8 of the 30 Day Challenge - Grapes 'n Cherries

grapes and cherries

Okay, now for something a little out of the ordinary. First thing different about this piece is that it is acrylic. Not something I do very often, but I figured that during this challenge it would be a good thing to experiment a little.

And second, this is from a live setup, sitting right on the desk, right next to my small works easel. Again, working from life isn't something I do enough and I need to do more. I'm building a shadow box right now and once that is finished, I'll start doing more still life setups.

Am I happy with this piece? Eh, not really. My intention is to do another one like it in the next few days, but will do it in oils and see how that goes.

Acrylics and me just don't get along. When I paint with them, by the second or third stroke it feels like I'm dragging glue across the canvas, with my brush sticking as it goes along. And if I use enough flow medium to get the paint flowing onto the canvas it looks really chalky to me. I'm not sure what the answer is.

Maybe I'll try again before the end of the challenge, but I wouldn't bet on it.

  1. I love that you are challenging yourself to paint from direct observation. I feel the same about acrylics!

  2. You are making great progress with acrylics! I THINK the are the Hardest to work with. Thin washed Layers to take the edge off and of course keep your nice soft spritz bottle nearby. Happy Painting!
